Workday handles the I-9 as a task inside onboarding that your managers complete. When we worked through a customer's Workday I-9 setup in September 2026, the gaps were in checking entries, reverification, and the audit record. Workday customers who call us keep Workday for HR and run the I-9 in i9 Intelligence through our connector.
i9 Intelligence
- You want entries checked as they're typed, so a 900-series Social Security number or a citizen with a List C EAD gets caught before Section 2 is signed.
- You hire remotely and want a trained team, or a manager you choose, to complete Section 2 by video.
- You want reverification alerts and a field-level audit trail you can hand to an inspector.
- You want Workday to stay your HR system, with the I-9 running alongside it through a pre-built connector.
Workday's I-9 module
- You hire in person, rarely need reverification, and your managers are trained on Workday's I-9 tasks.
- You want every onboarding step, including the I-9, in one system with one login.
- Your Workday partner has configured and tested your I-9 business processes and reports.
Side by side
Workday's details come from our September 2026 review of a customer's Workday I-9 setup. Configurations vary.

What we saw completing an I-9 in Workday
In September 2026 we spent more than an hour in a customer's Workday tenant with their Workday consultant, working as the new hire, the manager, and HR. Configurations differ, so read this as one real setup rather than every Workday customer's.
Section 1 needed a Workday login, and it accepted a Social Security number starting with 900 and a date of birth from the current month. In Section 2, List A was filtered by citizenship status but Lists B and C weren't, so a U.S. citizen with an EAD under List C went through. Section 2 could be signed weeks after the first day with only an overdue reason to pick, and a rehire reused the original I-9 without a Supplement B.
Reverification and the audit record
Workday has a Supplement B business process, but someone has to start it, and the delivered expiring-documents report in that tenant was labeled “DO NOT USE – legacy.” The process history logged steps, not changes to individual fields. For electronic I-9s, 8 CFR 274a.2(g)(1)(iv) calls for a permanent record of who changed the form, when, and what they did. The delivered bulk export, “Mass Print Form I-9 for Workers,” produced I-9 PDFs without document copies, E-Verify case details, or history.
Remote Section 2
Workday doesn't supply anyone to examine documents, so your managers do it or you arrange an authorized representative near the new hire. We didn't see an alternative-procedure checkbox in that tenant either. On i9 Intelligence, a manager or representative you choose completes Section 2 at no extra cost, or our US-based team does it by video for $50–$55 where the hiring site is enrolled in E-Verify (USCIS).
How the two work together
Workday stays your HR system. Our pre-built Workday connector brings new hires into i9 Intelligence so nobody retypes them, and the I-9, E-Verify, and reverification alerts run here. API, SFTP, and single sign-on come with our Enterprise Package for teams that want more.
Where Workday is stronger
Every comparison we publish includes this. If one of these matters most to you, Workday may be the better fit.
- Hiring, onboarding, payroll, and the employee record live in one system with one login.
- There's no second vendor to buy, contract, or connect.
- For in-person hiring with a well-tested configuration, the built-in I-9 may cover what you need.
Keep Workday. Add i9 Intelligence.
Workday stays your system of record. New hires flow from Workday into i9 Intelligence through our pre-built connector, and the Form I-9, E-Verify, remote Section 2, and reverification run here, with every change recorded in one audit trail.
